What Does an AI Image Checker Actually Check?
When generative AI tools (such as Midjourney, OpenAI DALL-E, Adobe Firefly, Stable Diffusion, or ComfyUI) export an image, they frequently embed structured parameters, cryptographic credentials, or workflow logs into the binary file container. An AI Image Checker inspects these hidden headers to determine if machine-readable provenance or generation footprints exist.
Supported AI & Provenance Signals
C2PA & Content Credentials
Cryptographic JUMBF boxes (APP11 in JPEG, caDX in PNG) created under the C2PA standard. These record author assertions, digital signing certificates, and generation history.
XMP AI Metadata
Adobe Extensible Metadata Platform packets containing Dublin Core schemas, AI generator names (e.g. Adobe Firefly), generation seeds, and prompt text.
EXIF Software Identifiers
Standard camera and software fields. We inspect the Software tag for references to AI editors (such as Photoshop Generative Fill) while distinguishing general editing apps from AI tools.
PNG Generative Workflow Chunks
Text chunks (tEXt, iTXt, zTXt) containing Automatic1111 parameter blocks (prompt, negative prompt, sampler, seed) or ComfyUI node graph execution JSON.
AI Image Checker vs. AI Pixel Detector
Understanding how container metadata inspection differs from statistical image classifiers.
| Feature | Metadata Checker (Our Tool) | Pixel AI Detector (Classifiers) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Data Source | Embedded container headers (C2PA, XMP, EXIF, PNG) | Raw visual pixels and color frequencies |
| Privacy & Processing | 100% In-Browser RAM (Zero server upload) | Usually requires uploading image to remote cloud GPU |
| Deterministic Accuracy | Exact for present tags (reports true parsed values) | Probabilistic percentage score (frequent false positives) |
| Can Detect Prompts/Seeds? | Yes (when stored in XMP or PNG chunks) | No (cannot reconstruct generation parameters) |
| After Metadata Stripping | Reports "No supported metadata detected" | Attempts statistical guess on visual artifacts |
The Check → Clean → Verify Workflow
Check
Drop single or batch files. The engine inspects headers locally in milliseconds.
Review
Inspect detected C2PA manifests, prompts, models, seeds, and software tags.
Clean
One-click lossless removal strips targeted AI metadata without recompressing image pixels.
Verify
The generated image is immediately rescanned to confirm targeted signals are purged.
What Does "No Supported AI-Related Metadata Detected" Mean?
If our checker reports that no supported AI-related metadata was detected, it means that standard C2PA containers, recognized XMP prompts, AI software signatures, and PNG workflow chunks were absent from the file.
This does not prove that the image was made by a human. Digital images often lack metadata because:
- Social media platforms (X, Instagram, WhatsApp, Discord) automatically purge metadata to save bandwidth.
- The creator or editor saved the image using "Save for Web" or a metadata-stripping utility.
- The image was captured by a human camera without any post-processing software.
- The generative AI tool used does not write metadata tags to exports.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does this AI Image Checker actually inspect?
This tool inspects embedded technical metadata and cryptographic provenance manifests inside your image file container. Specifically, it searches for C2PA Content Credentials, Adobe XMP AI namespaces (prompts, seeds, generative models), EXIF Software identifiers, and PNG workflow parameter chunks (such as Automatic1111 or ComfyUI node graphs).
Does this tool use statistical pixel classification to detect AI art?
No. This tool is a metadata and provenance signal checker, not a pixel-level heuristic AI detector. It does not guess whether visual brushstrokes or lighting patterns were rendered by a neural network. It reports verified binary tags stored directly in the file header.
Does 'No supported AI-related metadata detected' mean the image was taken by a human?
No. A clean metadata result does not prove human authorship. Most major social media platforms (such as X, Instagram, Facebook, and Reddit) automatically recompress and strip all metadata from uploaded images. Additionally, creators can easily wipe metadata prior to sharing.
Does finding C2PA metadata guarantee an image was generated by AI?
No. C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) Content Credentials are cryptographic manifests used for both human-captured photographs (e.g., Leica and Sony authenticated cameras) and AI-generated or edited media. Our tool inspects the manifest to check whether AI-generation assertions or specific generative tools are referenced.
Can I check multiple images simultaneously?
Yes. Our checker supports batch checking for up to 30 images in a single session. Images are processed with controlled in-browser concurrency to ensure fast, memory-safe execution without freezing your device.
Are my photos uploaded to a remote server or AI API for scanning?
No. Your files stay on your device. All parsing, binary header inspection, and signal extraction occur entirely inside your browser's local JavaScript memory using typed byte arrays. Zero image bytes leave your computer or phone.
What image formats are supported?
The checker supports JPG, JPEG, PNG, and WebP formats. These formats represent the vast majority of web images and generative AI exports.
Can I remove the detected AI metadata after checking?
Yes. Our built-in Check → Clean → Verify workflow allows you to strip detected AI prompts, model parameters, C2PA manifests, and software tags losslessly with one click. An automatic second-pass scan verifies that targeted signals are no longer detected before you download.
Why does my camera photo have software metadata?
Standard digital camera photos often embed the camera's internal firmware version or the desktop photo editor used (such as Adobe Lightroom or Apple Photos) in the EXIF Software tag. Our dashboard displays software tags for transparency while clarifying that standard editing software tags do not imply AI generation.
What is the difference between an AI Image Checker and an AI Metadata Viewer?
The AI Image Checker provides an immediate, high-level provenance assessment (summarizing C2PA, generator tools, and workflow signatures). The AI Metadata Checker and Viewer provide comprehensive, technical field-by-field raw dictionary inspection for advanced auditing.
